Dakar After Dark

The organizer had published no evening programme as of October 6, 2026. This page sets out the few dates that are fixed, how opening week ran in 2024 and 2022, and what governments say about the ride home.

What is announced

An Empty Programme, Four Fixed Dates

No outlet had reported an opening party, a dinner or a concert for the 16th Dakar Biennale (Dak’Art) as of October 6, 2026, and the organizer had published none. The biennale’s events page, last modified that afternoon, carries one sentence: “Retrouvez bientôt toutes les informations de la Biennale de Dakar relative à cette partie.” (in English: all the Biennale de Dakar information for this section will be available here soon). This page lists what is fixed, then sets down how earlier editions ran, as a record and not as a forecast.

The frame is firm. The launch communiqué dated September 24, 2026 fixes the edition from November 19 to December 19, 2026. It gives no hour, no place and no presiding official for November 19. APS reported on September 21 that the official calendar would be unveiled at the launch; no launch report read for this guide reproduces one. The older “Programme” page on the organizer’s site describes the 2022 edition and was last modified in December 2023.

The dates that are fixed

  1. Nov 6Selebe Yoon, on the Plateau, opens two exhibitions that run to March 27, 2027: 80-90, Deviation (Issa Samb, El Hadji Sy, and Kan-Si) and Djilor (Fatim Soumaré). No vernissage hour is published.
  2. Nov 19The biennale opens, by the organizer’s communiqué. Hour and place: not published. The tribute exhibition to Abdoulaye Niokhor Bob, known as Ngoor, runs at the Galerie nationale d’art for the same dates, as Le Soleil reported on October 5.
  3. Nov 23Partcours, the yearly circuit of Dakar galleries and art spaces, begins its 15th edition. It runs to December 13. Its site lists no evenings yet.
  4. Dec 19The biennale closes. No closing event is announced.

Reported once, not confirmed

Three further items rest on one press source each. Elle Afrique Francophone reported on August 23, 2026 that an exhibition titled Palimpseste de villes africaines, DIG Where You Stand would open in the OFF, the independent programme beside the official one, from November 20, with Otobong Nkanga, Sammy Baloji, and Tracey Rose among the artists. Unconfirmed It names no venue. Senego reported on June 11 that President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the guest country, and the singer Fally Ipupa had been announced. Unconfirmed No date or concert is named. Sud Quotidien, republished by Seneplus on September 26, wrote: “Quelques 450 expositions hors des murs sont annoncées” (in English: some 450 exhibitions outside the walls are announced). Unconfirmed The biennale’s page of figures uses the same number as an undated general statistic.

What to wait for

Under the OFF registration rules, every OFF exhibition must begin inside the biennale period, which is why the first nights fill up. The biennale gives each registered event a place in a printed programme and on a digital map, and the notice mentions a mobile application; no app name was found. Those documents will show where the evenings are. The Exhibitions explains the OFF, and Live lists the pages to watch. Morad Montazami, the artistic director, named performance among the edition’s media in an APS interview of September 30. No schedule has been given.

Biennale is independent and not affiliated with the organizer. Confirm every date and hour with the Secrétariat général.

Opening week, on the record

Mornings at the Grand Théâtre

The last two editions opened in the morning, not at night. What follows is a record of 2024 and 2022 from the organizer’s programmes and dated press reports. None of it is announced for 2026.

2024: the 15th edition, November 7 to December 7

The hours come from the organizer’s English programme of November 2024 and are approximate: an earlier French draft placed the vernissage a day later, and the English file has typing errors in its hours.

  1. Nov 7, 2024Thursday. The opening ceremony, by invitation, at the Grand Théâtre national from 10 am to noon. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye presided, PressAfrik reported. Agnès Brézéphin of Martinique received the Grand Prix Léopold Sédar Senghor, according to Le Quotidien.
  2. Nov 7, 2024From 5 pm to 8 pm, the opening of the international exhibition at the Ancien Palais de Justice, by invitation.
  3. Nov 8, 2024Friday. The exhibition opened to the public, 10 am to 7 pm. The professional meetings began. Partcours started the same day with its Plateau openings.
  4. Nov 15, 2024Friday. Lonnie Holley performed at the Ancien Palais de Justice from 5:30 pm; a “Biennial Grand Show” was listed on the esplanade at 9 pm.
  5. Dec 7, 2024Closing day. Julien Creuzet and Ana Pi performed on the esplanade from 5:30 pm, as Dakaractu announced.

Two more 9 pm concerts were listed for the opening weekend at the Place de la Nation; the French and English programmes place them on different evenings. Unconfirmed Through the month the courthouse kept an afternoon rhythm: video at 2 pm, a talk at 3:30 pm, a performance from 5 or 5:30 pm.

The President’s speech included the line “La culture reflète nos identités et les nourrit en retour” (in English: culture reflects our identities and nourishes them in return), as quoted by Le Quotidien on November 8, 2024. The Black Eyed Peas were in Dakar that weekend as part of the United States’ presence as guest country, the same paper reported.

The mood was less festive than the schedule. Diptyk reported on November 16, 2024 that the opening fell during a legislative election campaign, that gallery directors saw thinner professional attendance, and that the OFF offered no large gatherings that year.

2022: the 14th edition, May 19 to June 21

President Macky Sall opened the 14th edition on the morning of Thursday, May 19, 2022, at the Grand Théâtre national, according to the organizer’s report of May 21, 2022. Orchestra Baobab played, with the percussionists of the Doudou Ndiaye Rose family. The Grand Prix went to the Ethiopian artist Tegene Kunbi Senbeto.

The national pavilions opened the same day on the forecourt of the theatre, and the international exhibition at the Ancien Palais de Justice. The art market and professional meetings ran from May 22 to 25 at the Monument de la Renaissance africaine. Official concerts came later, in the first week of June: free, from 7 pm, by the organizer’s notice of May 31, 2022. The line-up was not read for this guide.

The organizer counted 403 events in the OFF brochure, and Diptyk judged on June 17, 2022 that the OFF had largely eclipsed the international exhibition.

What the two had in common

  • A morning ceremony by invitation at the Grand Théâtre national, presided over by the head of state, with the Grand Prix awarded on stage.
  • The national pavilions and the international exhibition inaugurated the same day.
  • Professional meetings starting within one to three days of the opening.

For the people who run the 2026 edition, see People; for the calendar as it stands, The Guide.

Not found: first-hand reports of where people gathered at night in 2022 or 2024. The art press that would carry them could not be read, and this guide names no bar or party from memory.

Biennale

“Au vu du contexte, nous avions peur d’une annulation”

— Salimata Diop, artistic director of the 2024 edition, in Diptyk, November 16, 2024. In English: given the context, we were afraid of a cancellation.

Partcours

Three Weeks of Gallery Evenings

The 15th edition of Partcours runs from November 23 to December 13, 2026, all of it inside the biennale. As of October 6, 2026, the site showed no programme and no confirmed participants. It listed 29 member spaces, a standing membership and not a line-up; What to See gives the names.

The circuit was created in 2012 by Koyo Kouoh’s RAW Material Company and Mauro Petroni’s Atelier Céramiques Almadies, according to Lepetitjournal Dakar. Its site describes the events as free and open to all.

The 2025 schedule, as the pattern

The table is the 14th edition, November 28 to December 14, 2025, as Partcours published it. It is last year’s schedule and shows the habit: openings almost every day, most between 5 pm and 9 pm.

The last biennale year

The closer precedent is 2024, when Partcours also ran inside the biennale. The 13th edition, November 8 to 24, 2024, had 33 spaces and started the day after Dak’Art opened, by the programme then published. Friday was a Plateau night, with Selebe Yoon, OH Gallery, Galerie Le Manège, and Galerie Cécile Fakhoury. Sunday moved to Point E, with RAW Material Company at 6 pm. The circuit then went out through Almadies, Médina, Rufisque, and Keur Massar. In 2023 each evening had a named district, as au-senegal.com recorded. Diptyk’s report of December 3, 2025 described a circuit built for circulating audiences more than for VIPs.

The galleries and art spaces, district by district

Music and going out

One Stage Confirmed Open

This is the thinnest part of the record. The travel and music pages that would supply a list of clubs could not be opened on October 6, 2026, and this guide names a venue only beside the publication that documented it.

The Théâtre de Verdure

One live stage is confirmed as operating in autumn 2026: the open-air Théâtre de Verdure at the Institut français du Sénégal. The institute’s own agenda lists concerts on October 16 and 30 and a comedy night on October 28, at 5,000 CFA francs a ticket, and a 7 pm DJ session at its restaurant, Le Bideew, on October 7. Nothing was listed yet for November 19 onward.

The agenda site Parallax-SN listed a Youssou N’Dour “Grand Bal” at the Grand Théâtre national on October 10, 2026, with tickets from 20,000 to 50,000 CFA francs. Unconfirmed That is before the biennale.

Festivals: none confirmed in the window

Dakar Music Expo gives no dates after March 2026. Festival Africa Fête still shows its 2025 edition, November 24 to December 31, 2025; a repeat would overlap the biennale, but no 2026 dates are posted. Festival Dakar Court shows none either, and the Goethe-Institut’s calendar was empty.

Mbalax, as far as the sources go

No source read for this guide defines mbalax, the music tied to Youssou N’Dour’s name, and this page will not define it from memory. Pan African Music’s documentary series Paris c’est l’Afrique gives its second episode to the many ways of mbalax, with N’Dour, Xalam, and Touré Kunda. Le Soleil published a video portrait of N’Dour on October 2, 2026, covering his beginnings and his club, the Thiossane; the text says nothing on whether the club is open. Pan African Music also has a feature on assiko in Grand Yoff and a filmed set by Guiss Guiss Bou Bess from an evening of the ElectrAfrique collective, published March 25, 2021. Where mbalax is played live in 2026, no source read says.

Two further names on the research list, Penc Mi and Bazoff, appeared in no source that could be read. Kër Thiossane, a Partcours member, is an art and multimedia villa, not the nightclub.

The United Kingdom’s travel advice, updated May 13, 2026, reports that Senegal amended its legislation on March 30, 2026, raising prison sentences for same-sex relations to five to ten years and criminalising the promotion, support or funding of homosexuality. The State Department’s advice reads: “Avoid traveling alone to bars or nightclubs.” More under safety.

Eating late

Grilled Meat and Three Glasses

The research holds few late addresses, and this section is short for that reason. No 2025 or 2026 press piece naming late-opening restaurants was found, and no published rule on alcohol service hours.

Dibi

Encyclopædia Britannica defines dibi as roasted meat, usually lamb, seasoned, grilled and cut into pieces, typically served with grilled onions, mustard and bread, and commonly sold by street vendors. A dibiterie, in au-senegal.com’s survey of Senegalese cooking (modified March 21, 2024), is a small stall that grills beef or lamb over a wood fire.

Atlas Obscura, on June 9, 2021, recommended Bantyii Dibiterie at 25 Rue M. N’Goun and listed it as open until at least 11 pm. Unconfirmed The entry was not verified for 2026.

Ataya

Ataya is the tea that ends a meal or fills an evening. It comes in three glasses, and au-senegal.com’s page on customs (November 4, 2013) gives the order: the first strong, the second balanced, the third very sweet. Accepting tea commits a guest to all three rounds, which takes more than an hour. Bradt’s Senegal guide describes gunpowder green tea, very hot and very sweet, in small glasses.

The same page gives the table rule: food is often shared from one dish and eaten with the right hand. More under manners.

Places with a named source

Le Bideew, in the garden of the Institut français, hosts the institute’s early-evening DJ sessions, and Lonely Planet’s undated Dakar restaurants page calls it an arts café. That page lists other tables, undated and unchecked for 2026; see where to eat.

Getting home

Dark by Seven

Dakar keeps UTC+0 all year. The sun sets at about 6:38 pm on November 19 and 6:45 pm on December 19, and it is dark by a little after 7 pm. These times were calculated for this guide with the NOAA solar equations, not taken from a published table, and are good to within two or three minutes. A 5 pm to 8 pm vernissage, as in 2024, ends in the dark.

What the advisories say

The United States puts Senegal at Level 1, its lowest. The United Kingdom warns against no part of the country. Canada asks for a high degree of caution because of crime. France places Dakar in its yellow zone of reinforced vigilance. On the hours after dark they agree.

The Foreign Office page, updated May 13, 2026, tells visitors to “be particularly careful after nightfall and avoid walking alone”. The State Department page of December 4, 2025 is specific about one road: “Robberies occur regularly along the Corniche d’Ouest in Dakar. This is an area heavily frequented by tourists and westerners.” Canada lists the Corniche in the evening among the places that call for extra caution.

The advisories do not name the biennale’s venues. The inference is this guide’s own: the Ancien Palais de Justice stands at Cap Manuel, at the southern end of the Corniche, so leaving an evening opening there on foot is the case they describe.

Taxis

The State Department’s line on taxis: “Regulated orange taxis are generally safe, but make sure to agree on a fare before beginning the trip.” Canada describes the official livery as yellow and black, says taxis have no meter, and advises against sharing one with strangers.

au-senegal.com’s cost-of-living piece of July 7, 2026 puts a city ride generally between 1,000 and 3,500 CFA francs. No dated source gives a night fare from Cap Manuel.

Ride-hailing

The State Department names Heetch as available. On September 24, 2025, a Dakar court ruled that Yango, Yassir, and Heetch could continue operating, RTS reported. Canada’s advice is to confirm the driver and the plate before getting in. Neither Yango’s nor Heetch’s Senegal page could be opened, so availability late at night is not verified.

Last buses, last trains, last boats

  • BRT. Line B1 runs “du lundi au dimanche ; de 6 h à 21 h” (in English: Monday to Sunday, from 6 am to 9 pm), by au-senegal.com’s guide of September 29, 2026; the operator’s line page gives the same hours. The line does not run along the Corniche or to Almadies, Ngor or Ouakam.
  • TER. The operator’s timetable page, undated and not yet updated for the airport extension, gives last departures at 10:05 pm. First and last trains at the airport station were not found.
  • Gorée. The ferry timetable transcribed by au-senegal.com, updated November 18, 2025, has the last boat from the island at 11 pm, Monday to Saturday.
  • Not found. Night bus services and their hours.

The State Department advises against motorbikes and the cars rapides minibuses. The practical page covers getting around and late arrivals at the airport.

For professionals

Meetings Without a Date

For 2026 the professional days are announced and undated.

What is known for 2026

  • Scientific and professional meetings are planned, according to Sud Quotidien as republished by Seneplus on September 26, 2026. Unconfirmed No date, venue or registration is given.
  • One of the five curatorial lines is Partager les savoirs (sharing knowledge), by the organizer’s communiqué. No public programme is attached yet.
  • Accreditation for media and professionals had not opened. The accreditation page, modified October 5, 2026, carried the same placeholder as the events page.

What is not known

The dates and place of the professional days. Whether an art market is held, as in 2022. Whether there are preview days. Portfolio reviews, workshops and residency open days: nothing was found.

The precedents

In 2024 the meetings began the day after the opening, in the auditorium of the Musée des Civilisations noires, and ran four mornings from 9:30 am, by the 2024 programme; the organizer posted pictures of the first. In 2022 an art market sat inside the official programme, with professional meetings from May 22 to 25 at the Monument de la Renaissance africaine. The organizer’s page of figures claims 11,000 professionals for 2018.

RAW Material Company and the galleries

The site of RAW Material Company, the art centre Kouoh founded, refused connection on October 6, 2026, and its plans for November and December could not be read. What is documented is last year’s format: five sessions in Partcours 2025, on December 8 and from December 10 to 13, by the Partcours programme. That is not a 2026 announcement.

Selebe Yoon describes itself as a gallery and residency with conversations and mediation programmes. OH Gallery, at 143 avenue Lamine Guèye, takes visits by appointment on Tuesdays and in the mornings.

Two of the edition’s curators are based in Dakar: Delphine Lopez and Fatima Bintou Rassoul Sy, who joins the Musée des Civilisations noires in December 2026, according to Le Soleil, September 25, 2026. See People, The Exhibitions and, for press contacts, Live.
