Which Art Week?

Art Week NYC in November is not the May fair week, not the 2022 coalition, and not newyorkartweek.com. Five uses of one name, side by side.

Five Things Called Art Week

The November event is called Art Week NYC. It is new, it is gallery-led, and it is presented by Artforum, ARTnews and Art in America. But “New York Art Week” has meant other things, and still does. ARTnews noted in its launch story that earlier uses of the name “generally centered around art fairs like Frieze and the Armory Show.” Here is how to tell them apart.

Uses of the name, and what each one is

Biennale found no city, fair or organizer endorsement of newyorkartweek.com’s “official” description. Penske Media Corporation applied in April 2026 to register ART WEEK NYC as a trademark (USPTO serial 99767703); the application was pending on the date checked, according to a summary of the federal record. And one more

The Armory and The Armory Show

A second, older confusion: the Park Avenue Armory, on the Upper East Side, is the building where the ADAA Fair and Salon Art + Design take place. The Armory Show is a different fair, named for the 1913 exhibition, held in September at the Javits Center on the West Side. Neither is part of Art Week NYC’s own program, although the ADAA Fair is its official collaborator.

How Biennale writes it

A Style Note

On first mention, this Special Report says “Art Week NYC (Artforum, ARTnews and Art in America; November 11–14).” It uses “Art Week in New York” only as the title of the report, which covers the fortnight around it, and does not call the November event “New York Art Week.”
