Miami Art Week · November 30 to December 6, 2026

Out of town · The day before or after

Short Drives From Miami

From ten minutes out to four hours: what is on in early December, what it costs, and which places a train will reach.

Dec4–62026

Next edition

Art Basel Miami Beach

Opens Dec 4, 2026

The map beyond the causeway

North, West, South

Miami Art Week persuades its visitors that the art of South Florida fits between two causeways. It does not. Within two hours of the convention center there is a museum hung with Rothko and Pollock, a photographer’s gallery in a swamp, a castle one man cut from limestone, and a private collection in a former munitions armory.

There are only three directions. North runs up the coast to Palm Beach, with two railroads beside the highway. West is the Everglades. South is farmland, then the Keys.

The table gives each place a distance and a time. Three are sourced and marked. The rest are approximate road figures from the Miami Beach Convention Center on clear roads, which Art Week does not supply; add the causeway.

Short drives from Miami Beach. Distances and times are approximate unless marked: * mapsof.net, † Wanderlog, ‡ Enterprise, each measured from Miami, not the beach. Confirm hours with each venue.

For the destinations marked “No”, My Biennale’s car-rental partners compare the airport desks: QEEQ, Auto Europe, and EconomyBookings. Each opens its own search. GetTransfer offers a car with a driver by the day. For the Everglades and Key West without driving, GetYourGuide lists Everglades tours from Miami and Key West day trips.

Close in · Coral Gables and Coconut Grove

The Ten-Minute Drive

Ten minutes from downtown, that is; from the beach, allow the causeway. These three need no highway and no full day, and the Metrorail Orange Line, which the airport lists at $2.25, serves Coconut Grove.

The plant explorer David Fairchild named his Coconut Grove garden after the villages he had seen in Malaysia. It now belongs to the National Tropical Botanical Garden and opens Tuesday to Saturday, 9 am to 4:30 pm, with last entry at 3 pm. Reservations are encouraged. Pinta Miami is in the same neighborhood from December 3.

Its visit page gives Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm, and $12.50, but also lists holiday closures for 2018. Hours unconfirmed

West · The Tamiami Trail

Into the Everglades

US 41 leaves Miami as SW 8th Street, the same Calle Ocho that passes Versailles, and runs on to Naples. December opens the dry season. The National Park Service warns that winter weekends bring long lines at the gates and advises arriving before 10 am on a weekday.

Shark Valley

The park’s Miami entrance is at 36000 SW 8th Street, 25 miles west of the Turnpike. Entry is $35 a vehicle, valid for seven days, and cashless. No public transport runs within the park.

Clyde Butcher’s Big Cypress Gallery

Farther on, at mile marker 54.5 in Ochopee, the photographer Clyde Butcher shows his large black-and-white pictures of the Everglades in the place they were made. AIRIE

The art most closely tied to this terrain has no gallery in it. • Friday, December 4. The Norton stays open until 10 pm.

  • All week. A seasonal Homestead trolley to the park’s Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center runs from December to April, per the Park Service.

New Wave Art Wknd

The event to watch is the one without a date. The gallerist Sarah Gavlak founded New Wave Art Wknd in Palm Beach in 2018, and Galerie described the 2022 edition, December 2 to 4, as timed to the final weekend of Art Basel Miami Beach, with The Bunker and the Norton among its venues. No 2026 dates were found. Not yet announced

  • Midday. The Norton, open 10 am to 5 pm on Monday: Abercrombie, Plumb, Chang Dai-chien, and the pictures Griffin sent.
  • Afternoon. Across the bridge to Whitehall, if the Flagler Museum’s hours allow; confirm first.
  • Evening. The train back.

By Car: The Trail

  • 9:30 am. Vizcaya as it opens.
  • Late morning. West on SW 8th Street to Shark Valley.
  • Early afternoon. On to the Big Cypress Gallery, which closes at 5 pm.
